Two fortifications from the 14th century in Södra Vi.
Two fortifications from the 14th century in Södra Vi. In 1991 an archaeological investigation by the Södra Vi Prehistoric Society commenced. They found out that in 1389, battles were fought between Queen Margareta of Denmark and King Albrekt.
That is probably when Krönsborg was burnt down. The heat of the fire in the building was so intense that it caused the mountain to melt. The roof caved in and people got caught in the flames. Burned bones were found in the house. Many of the objects that have been found have been hard to identify because of the severity of the fire. But they have succeeded in finding coins, knives, horseshoes, spear heads, nails, a pearl, chain mail etc. They have come to the conclusion that there used to be approximately 10 houses on the island. In one of them they have found food remains like bones from cattle, horse, fowl and sheep and so on.
You can visit Krönsborg and Ivarsudde all year round!
